About The Combat Codes
Alexander Darwin has created a gripping story and a fascinating world in The Combat Codes. A cast of vibrant characters, plenty of martial arts action and a dystopian sci-fi setting.
Overall, a compelling and riveting experience.
Producing the audiobook
As a narrator, it was a great pleasure to give voice to these diverse characters:
The young protagonist: Cego. He struggles with his own inner conflict, trying to balance his compassion for the underdog with his desire to prove himself in a world that has treated him harshly.
Cego’s mentor, friend and coach – Murray, a gruff, seasoned fighter. He’s jaded by the injustices he sees and determined to maintain his honour.
Plus a host of other voices. Two of my favourites: The “bit-minder”. He’s a kind of cyborg-being suspended in a glass bubble who manipulates events electronically.
And Ozark, a mean-spirited task-master who speaks through an electronic voice-box which occasionally malfunctions! I also really enjoyed bringing the action and tension of the fight scenes to life and describing the mixture of Jiu-Jitsu and other Martial Arts. It took me back to my own early years as a Kung-Fu and Karate fanatic!
More about the story
The Combat Codes fuses thrilling mixed martial arts action into an immersive sci-fi world. A must-read for any fan of unarmed combat. Murray Pearson is sick of buying broken kids from the slave Circles. He’s sick of training them to become skilled combatants, only to watch them break again. He’s sick of reporting his failures as a talent scout to men who don’t have the guts to stand in the Circles themselves. Cego doesn’t understand why he’s fighting. He doesn’t understand the grueling training sessions he’s forced to endure every day. He doesn’t understand why they scream for blood when he steps into the Circle. The one thing Cego does understand is hand-to-hand combat. He was born to fight. Cego is sent down an unlikely path at Murray’s side, paved with fierce competition at the world’s most prestigious combat school along with the answers to his own mysterious past.
Only the beginning…
The Combat Codes is Alexander Darwin’s first novel and the beginning of a longer saga. The story is very enjoyable as a self-contained novel but leaves you wanting more. And you won’t be disappointed on that score! The Combat Codes Part 2: “Grievar’s Blood” was released in 2020, and Part 3 is due for release in 2021.
